Did you know Electronic Arts released a game in the US that was literally 17.5% too fast to play?
In this video, we break down the infamous Mega Drive / Sega Genesis port of Shadow of the Beast. Originally developed in the UK by WJS Design, the game was built and optimized specifically for European PAL systems. However, when EA brought the game over to the US NTSC market, they completely forgot—or refused—to optimize the code!
The result? An already brutally difficult retro platformer running 17.5% faster on American hardware, turning a legendary visual showcase into an unplayable nightmare where enemies spawn faster than human reaction time allows.
Watch to learn how region coding, PAL vs. NTSC scanlines, and corporate laziness created one of retro gaming’s most bizarre region-exclusive blunders—and how JVC actually fixed it for Japanese gamers!
And yes, before you ask, I’m “That Guru Larry” that was on TV 😂
