Piracy is often praised for preserving video games, but what happens when the bootlegs actually destroy your hardware and ruin your childhood saves? Today, we are looking at the times when game-breaking piracy hacks completely backfired on the players.

We dive deep into how cheap Game Boy Advance bootlegs wiped out millions of 40-hour Pokémon Emerald save files, and how sketchy software destroyed PC optical drives during the mid-2000s StarForce DRM wars. We also explore the truth behind Sonic Adventure 2’s missing floor glitch on the Sega Dreamcast, and why dial-up modems forced PS1 pirates to completely strip iconic soundtracks from games like Metal Gear Solid.
