Atomic Robo-Kid is one of those arcade shooters that seems to have slipped under the radar, despite receiving a surprising number of home conversions. In this video, I take an in-depth look at the unlikely Commodore 64 port before comparing it with the versions released for the Amiga, Atari ST, Mega Drive, PC Engine and Sharp X68000.
I also look at the cancelled ZX Spectrum version, the mysterious missing Amstrad CPC port, and take a look at the company behind the game – UPL (Universal Playland).
Could the ageing Commodore 64 really do justice to a late-80s arcade shooter? And why did it receive a release when the Spectrum version was cancelled?
