The video game history of Star Wars Episode I: Racer begins with its highly-praised original release in 1999 on the Nintendo 64 (N64), PC (Microsoft Windows/Mac OS), and later the Sega Dreamcast. Developed by LucasArts, the game distilled the iconic podracing sequence from The Phantom Menace into a critically acclaimed futuristic racer, featuring over 20 unique podracers and tracks across 8 planets. The N64 version notably offered a two-player split-screen, while the PC version featured enhanced music and cutscenes. A simplified, one-on-one drag racing title was also released for the Game Boy Color in 1999. Following the initial success, an arcade-exclusive title, Star Wars: Racer Arcade, hit arcades in 2000, featuring a handful of tracks and a deluxe cabinet modeled after a podracer cockpit.
The direct sequel, Star Wars Racer Revenge, was developed by Rainbow Studios and released exclusively for the PlayStation 2 (PS2) in 2002. Set eight years after the film, it introduced a new focus on destroying rival pods during a race as Sebulba sought revenge against Anakin Skywalker. The franchise then experienced a modern resurgence when Aspyr brought the N64 original back as an HD re-release with modernized controls for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in June 2020, followed quickly by a release on Xbox One in October 2020, making the classic podracing experience available to a new generation of players.
