The Illegal Secret Hidden Inside Goldeneye
DJ Slopes
Ever wondered what the biggest secret hidden inside GoldenEye 007 actually was?
Back in 1997, GoldenEye 007 was at the absolute peak of N64 popularity. But while you were busy arguing over who got to play as Oddjob in multiplayer and slapping your friends around the Facility, an absolutely insane secret was hiding right under your nose. The developers at Rare were massive nerds, and just for a laugh, they built a fully functioning 1980s ZX Spectrum emulator directly into the game’s engine—loading it up with 10 classic retro games from their Ultimate Play the Game days!
When Rare realized at the absolute last second that they had a glaring legal issue and didn’t actually own the rights to distribute the emulator, things got weird. Did they delete it to avoid a massive corporate lawsuit? Nope. They just disabled the access code and shipped the game anyway.
Watch to find out how this completely dormant code sat undiscovered for 15 years until modders finally cracked it in 2012, and how Nintendo accidentally distributed millions of pirated video games, turning the world’s most famous secret agent into an unwitting software bootlegger!
