Before Ninja Theory became famous for masterpieces like Hellblade, they were a small indie studio called Just Add Monsters. After Microsoft rejected a sequel to their 2003 debut Xbox brawler, Kung Fu Chaos, the team pivoted to a more mature concept.
Publishers told them “cartoonish games were dead” heading into the next console generation. So, they completely scrapped the cartoon aesthetic in favor of realistic, cinematic graphics. The result? Heavenly Sword was born, catching the eye of Sony, securing a massive publishing deal, and changing the studio’s trajectory forever!
